What did Ray-Ban do to turn the Wayfarer into an American icon and save it from ultimate doom? Here is the Wayfarer story.
Humble Beginnings
First introduced in 1952, the Wayfarer was originally targeted at pilots, playing off the success of the Aviator model. But rather than go for the large lenses designed to cover the strange-looking tan lines caused by the large goggles worn by the open cockpit pilots of WWI, Wayfarers were much sleeker looking.
But it was thanks to Audrey Hepburn wearing a pair them in the movie Breakfast at Tiffany's that gave the Wayfarer initial success.
The Fall
By the 70's, however, sales had become quite slow. Ray-Ban was ready to discontinue the line. Even though they had experienced success, clearly attributable to their appearance in the movies, it wasn't until 1982 that the whole idea of product placement really took off.
That's when the producers of the soon-to-be filmed E.T.: The Extra-Terrestrial approached candy company Mars Inc. about using M&M's in their movie. Mars turned down the offer after film makers asked for payment. Hershey's, on the other hand, decided to take the risk and paid to have Reese's Pieces appear in the movie.
The incredible success of Reese's Pieces' appearance in E.T. caused product placement companies to start springing up.
Return of an Icon
After being approached by one such company, Ray-Ban agreed to pay to have the Wayfarer appear in the movie Risky Business where Tom Cruise famously wore them throughout the movie as well as for promotional posters and box covers.
The Wayfarer's 1983 sales saw a boost that would cement its iconic destiny. The Wayfarer went on to appear in over 360 movies and television shows during the next four years.
Today, movies like 1998's The Truman Show lampoon product placement efforts and attempts at covert marketing are easily picked off by savvy viewers. Migraine Headache Symptoms, Causes of Migraine Headache

Almost everyone gets headaches. You might feel throbbing in the front of your head during a cold or bout with the flu, for example. Or you might feel pain in your temples or at the back of your head from a tension headache after a busy day. Most regular headaches produce a dull pain around the front, top, and sides of your head, almost like someone stretched a rubber band around it.
Migraine headaches are caused by a rapid widening and narrowing of blood vessel walls in the brain and head. This causes the pain fibers in the blood vessel wall to become irritated. Blood vessels in the scalp are often involved. Some of the events that have been reported to causes migraine headaches are: hunger, cheese, changes in weather, nuts, fatigue, avocados, oral contraceptives, chocolate, menstrual periods, food cured with nitrates (e.g., hot dogs), emotional stress, meat tenderizers (e.g., MSG), and alcoholic beverages. It is not known why some individuals have migraines and others do not.
A migraine headache is a form of vascular headache. Migraine headache is caused by a combination of vasodilatation (enlargement of blood vessels) and the release of chemicals from nerve fibers that coil around the blood vessels. During a migraine attack, the temporal artery enlarges. (The temporal artery is an artery that lies on the outside of the skull just under the skin of the temple.) Enlargement of the temporal artery stretches the nerves that coil around the artery and causes the nerves to release chemicals. The chemicals cause inflammation, pain, and further enlargement of the artery. The increasing enlargement of the artery magnifies the pain.
Migraine is characterized by attacks of sharp pain involving (usually) one half of the skull and accompanied by nausea, vomiting, photophobia and occasionally visual (or rarely other) disturbances known as aura. The symptoms and their timing vary considerably among migraine suffers, and to a lesser extent from one migraine attack to the next.
A severe migraine attack can cause a persistent throbbing or pounding pain, with sensitivity to light, sound and movement. The pain may be on just one side of the head, though there may be pressure on both. Attacks last between four and 72 hours. You may also feel nauseous, be sick, have diarrhoea, or feel exhausted.
Some people get signs and symptoms that a migraine is about to come on (prodromal phase). Possible early warning symptoms include such things as raised or dull senses, irritability, withdrawal from people, cravings for particular foods (especially sweet foods), lot of yawning or having trouble talking. The exercise is very simple: first, stand up straight with your feet pointing directly forwards, about a shoulder width apart and place your hands on the small of your back and breathe in deeply. Breathe out slowly. As you do so, bend backwards, supporting your back with your hands, so that your back is arched. You can then repeat the same steps for ten times.

It was bedtime for our boys. Instead of sleeping peacefully, when my husband and I peered into their bedroom they were playing an imaginary game of baseball. It could have been the World Series considering their exuberance. Tommy, who is three, was excitedly jumping up and down on his bed, a baseball in hand yelling, "Oh, yeah, oh yeah! Jack, we won the game! We won the game, Jack! Yeah, baby!" My husband gives me a knowing look and says, "Jack, Tom. We get it. We know the feeling."
Ah, what a sweet feeling to win. It is not the reason why we compete, but it is true satisfaction to clinch the victory. It is not the message that we have taught our boys. On the contrary, we are always emphasizing cooperation, participation and teamwork. I can hear myself commenting after a youth soccer game, "It doesn't matter who won the game. Bottom line: did everyone have fun?" Regardless of how often I repeat these words, the reality is that we can't help but appreciate the excitement that our youngsters show toward sport and competition.

Competition provides the intensity, strength and persistence to improve, and "dig deeper" than you would in training. In competition, an athlete will do what he/she needs to do to win the race. In this light, we can we can look at competitiveness as instinctive, and helping to improve an individuals performance. Competitiveness is the drive that athletes use to push themselves forward. In fact, competitiveness, in its most basic form, is what all humans draw on to survive and get through every day life. Competitiveness is the fire inside of you. It is the spark of creativity and artistry.
A pro cyclist once told me a story about a friend of hers who lacked huge aspirations. It was almost like, one of my primary needs became riding. I needed food, sleep, and I needed to ride my bike. I felt that. I literally couldn't live without it."
Which mind set are you? The second example, makes it clear that competitiveness is not solely about winning. It is about passion. A passion for excelling, exceeding, persevering and achieving. It doesn't have to be against someone. It is the passion to be the best that you can be, and not be satisfied with anything less. One of the best ways to experience the outdoors in Seattle is to go mountain biking. One of the reasons mountain biking is so great is because it is so accessible. There are numerous trails that are suitable for all types of skill levels. I mean, with the Olympics on one side and the Cascades on the other, the hard part can be actually picking one to ride.
There are many websites out there that can give you a good idea on where to go for some good mountain biking in trails, but if you're interested in some ideas for some good trails right away, you can check out the following (most of these are within 20 minutes of Seattle):
1. State Edward State Park - I've been to this park numerous times with my kids and not only is there a fun playground for them, but there is a nice trail that's perfect for both beginners and intermediate riders. There are some drops and rises but overall it's pretty good.
2. Banner Forest - This trail is accessible by ferry, and hey, what could be more fun for your kids than taking their bikes on the ferry and riding to the trail from the dock. That's pretty exciting! There are over 20 miles of trail at the park so you'll have plenty of options to choose from.
3. Soaring Eagle - This trail is located fairly closer to the Cascades. There are a lot of intersecting trails and it could be easy to get turned around, but what's great is that there are maps of the trails at almost every intersection (too bad every park doesn't include these). This trail is a little tricker so you might want to make sure the riders you're going with are a little more skilled, but it's a fun place to ride.
There is another trail that isn't strictly a mountain biking trail located throughout Seattle. It's called the Burke-Gilman trail and goes all over the place: through Fremont, along Lake Washington, and even through the campus located at UW. It's a paved trail so there's nothing worry about in regards of drops or jumps.
So what if you want to mountain bike in Seattle but don't want to bring your bike with you on vacation? Well, lucky for you there are tons of places all over the region where you can rent mountain bikes. Once you figure out where you're staying, it's just a matter of asking around for a local bike shop and you'll be able to get what you need without any problems.

Causes of Tinnitus

The sounds of tinnitus should be looked upon as symptoms of another underlying condition, or, conditions. Tinnitus isn't a condition that just happens on its own, it is caused by a number of things, usually in or around your ears, head and neck.
In 'subjective' tinnitus, only the victim hears the sounds, while in 'objective' tinnitus the sounds can also be heard by a medical professional using a special audio instrument. Subjective tinnitus is by far the most common condition. For this article I am only considering subjective tinnitus.
The sounds of tinnitus have been described in a number of different ways. The sounds have been described as, ringing, whistling, whooshing, knocking, ticking, clicking, hissing, and more. These sounds can be described as the symptoms of tinnitus, but, remember that tinnitus is a symptom of something else.
By far the most common causes of tinnitus are things like, inner ear infection or damage, auditory nerve damage, damaged hearing through noise pollution, a blow to the head, whiplash injury, otosclerosis, meniere's disease, and, eustachian tube blockage. The overuse of some drugs such as aspirin, for example, can also cause tinnitus.
So to the treatment for tinnitus. There are drug-based treatments, surgery, complimentary treatments and technological treatments. But unfortunately, there is no one treatment that has been proven to cure tinnitus outright.
Drug-based treatment utilises such drug types as antidepressants, antihistamines, anticonvulsants, and, cardiovascular. Surgery is hardly ever used, and, only as a last resort. Acupuncture, meditation, yoga and such like are also used. Technology is utilized through 'maskers', for example, which are worn like a hearing aid but produce sounds to try to cover-up or mask the sounds of tinnitus.
